Mission Statement
The American Red Cross, a humanitarian organization led by volunteers and guided by its Congressional Charter and the Fundamental Principles of the International Red Cross Movement, will provide relief to victims of disaster and help people prevent, prepare for, and respond to emergencies.

American Red Cross disaster assistance is free, made possible by voluntary donations of time and money from the American people.

 

Disaster Training Classes

The Chapter is offering the following courses to prepare volunteers to provide shelter, food and financial assistance to residents displaced from their homes at the scene of local disasters and/or by deploying to major disasters anywhere in the country.
All training will be held at the Chapter offices, 205 E. Beaver Avenue, Suite 203, State College.

Title and Description

October 1 Fulfilling Our Mission (New Disaster Volunteers) 6:30 p.m.
Introduces potential disaster volunteers and members of other local agencies to the role of the Red Cross in the community’s actions in preparing for, responding to and recovering from emergencies and disasters
October 6 Disaster Assessment, Part II 6:30 p.m.
This basic course prepares volunteers to assess the damages caused by disasters. It is required for local Disaster Action Team members and for national deployment as a Disaster Assessment Service Associate. This course has an on-line prerequisite.  Call Emergency Services Director Romayne Naylor at 814/237-3162 for details
October 15 Shelter Operations Provides participants with knowledge of Red Cross policies and procedures for setting up, running and closing a shelter during a disaster
October 29 Shelter Simulation 6:30 p.m.
This course is a practical exercise for shelter operations. It is required for those wishing to become shelter volunteers locally and on national deployment.
November 5 Client Casework 6:30 p.m.
A basic requirement for disaster response volunteers, this course teaches how to provide financial assistance to disaster clients through proper casework.
November 12 Logistics Overview 6:30 p.m.
 An overview course to help Red Cross disaster volunteers determine whether they want to manage facilities, transportation or the supplies required for a disaster relief operation.
December 10 Mass Care Overview 6:30 p.m.
This course provides an overview of the mass care activity and prepares volunteers to specialize in sheltering, feeding or logistics.
