   Local Blood Drives

Thank you for looking up our bloodmobile location schedule. The Red Cross must have an adequate supply of blood available for area hospitals to help save and sustain the lives of accident victims, cancer patients, and others. Type O blood is particularly important because it can safely be transfused in an emergency to patients with other blood types.  Regardless of type, every blood unit is important. Bring a friend.

You may make an appointment to give blood at the regularly scheduled Tuesday bloodmobile at the  American Red Cross Donor Center, Glennland Building, in State College by calling 1-800-448-3543 (1-800-GIVELIFE). Appointments are strongly suggested although walk-ins are welcomed.

The drives that that are marked "**2RBC**" have double blood cell collection capabilities.

If you need directions on how to get to any of the locations below, note the address, then  click here for a map, or call the Centre Communities Chapter blood services office at 814/237-2713.

Making the Most of Your Gift
Tips for Blood Donors

Day of Donation
Drink extra water and fluids before you donate to replace the volume of blood you will donate and to prevent low blood pressure. You should continue drinking extra fluids after donation, too. Coffee and tea don’t count, because the caffeine causes your body to lose more fluid than the drinks provide.

Eat foods containing protein or complex carbohydrates, such as bread, cereal, fruit or lean meat. You will feel more comfortable during and after donating. Before you donate, a small meal or snack will do.

But avoid eating fatty foods, such as hamburgers, French fries, ice cream or cheese before donating.

As part of our vigorous safety screening, after you donate, your blood will be tested for infections to make certain it is safe for transfusion. Fatty materials –lipids – that appear in your blood for several hours after eating fatty foods can affect these tests. When this occurs, testing cannot be performed, and we may not be able to use your blood.

On behalf of the patients whose lives you will save, thank you for your interest in donating blood to the American Red Cross. Your gift really does help others to live.
